Garden Grove
Naveen Marasinghe asked:

The Virginia Robinson Gardens are an expansive six acres of botanical garden that is known for its gardens and tropical and sub tropical vegetation. The Robinson gardens were first opened to the public in 1982. Prior to being a public garden it housed the Robinson estate which is an exquisitely designed elegant Mediterranean Revival style home that was built in 1911. When it was constructed it was one of the first homes to be built in the area, the importance attached to the Robinson estate was so profound that its owner Mrs. Virginia Robinson was referred to as the first lady of Beverly Hills.

The hilly six acre estate though grand and imposing when constructed was turned in to the lush paradise through the care and diligence of Mrs. Robinson herself. During its heyday the Robinson estate was famed for its grand parties and the bridge games it regularly hosted that were attended by well known movie stars and rich businessmen.

The mansion itself is a delight to explore and is filled with ornaments and furniture that Virginia Robinson had bought on her exotic vacations. The elegantly furnished home was designed by Mrs. Robinson’s father the noted architect Nathaniel Dryden. The rooms open for visitors include the bright, sophisticated living room the centerpiece of this room is the ornate silver mantelpiece. The parlor is elegantly furnished and features an impressive grand piano and an expensive chandelier, the large library that contains many first editions and collectibles holds a massive carved oak table and a grandfather clock that was stopped at 6.20, the time of Mrs. Robinson’s death.

The large expansive gardens are also elegantly designed in a Mediterranean terraced style, the first area that visitors will see is the “Mall”. This is a perfectly manicured stretch of lawn that is bordered by tall cypress trees, a blue tiled swimming pool and the immaculate white Robinson home can be seen on either side. On the western side large weeping willows and blooming magnolias can be seen. While on the eastern side a palm grove, exotic trees imported from Australia and other tropical plants are tastefully arranged.

Located close to this historic property is Raffles L’Ermitage a luxury hotel in Beverly Hills that offers great access to many of the sights and sounds of the region.
